clc - writing a series
It's Thursday, which means it's time for another Chick Lit Chat. Tonight at 8 p.m. EST/ 7 p.m. CDT, Tracie Banister will co-host a chat with Nicky Wells, author of the Rock Star Romance Series. Fittingly, their discussion will cover the joys and challenges of writing a series.
When I think of the challenges that might come with writing a series, the biggest one that comes to mind is consistency. I'm reminded of an interview I watched last spring when A Song of Fire and Ice series author George R. R. Martin mentioned he'd messed up some details going from book to book. For example, he gave one character blue eyes in one book and green in another. In one book, the horse was male and in the other female.
While those are smaller details, then say, completely changing a character's behavior or key plot elements, readers will notice inconsistencies. And according to the author of the books that inspired the Game of Thrones TV series, they do.
According to this interview, George said he resolves this by contacting a couple of devout fans from overseas who help him stay consistent. I can think of easier ways, like working from super organized notes, but we all have to do what we have to do, right?
And for the joys? How fun is it to revisit characters you love from the past? I'm a big fan of Nora Roberts' series, because you get a chance to see different perspectives and stories while still checking in with the people you met and loved in previous books.
As someone who is interested in one day writing a series, I can't wait to hear what these ladies have to say. Join them tonight at 8/7 on Twitter using #chicklitchat.
