this is MY fight song

This week I'm playing Rachel Platten's "Fight Song" on repeat.

The first time I heard this song was on the night of my twenty-hrmph birthday earlier this summer. I'd enjoyed a couple of Moscow Mules, Dirty Shirleys, and blueberry beers throughout the afternoon and evening (and now that I'm twenty-hrmph I felt it the next day), and I was feeling a good personal jam session. About halfway through hearing it on the radio I was furiously typing it into my phone to immediately add the song to my Spotify favorites list.

There were a few reasons this song jumped out to me then and now.

For one, it's catchy, but equally empowering to sing. If you're going to have a song stuck in your head, it might as well be one about how even if nobody else believes in you or your dream, you're still willing to fight for it.

Just look at the bridge and chorus:
And all those things I didn't say
Wrecking balls inside my brain
I will scream them loud tonight
Can you hear my voice this time?
This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I'm alright song
My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong
I'll play my fight song
And I don't really care if nobody else believes
'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me
Though it isn't difficult to believe Rachel's singing about her own dream of becoming a singer, this song struck a chord with me (oh puns) as a writer. I have two books and two short stories published with a third novel and two novellas coming out later this year. I'm extremely proud of myself, but it's a constant fight to keep writing and to keep promoting my work and believing that one day I will see my name on a best-sellers list. It might not happen tomorrow (when my third novel is released), it might not happen in the next year, and it might not happen this decade, but I have to keep working toward that dream and having faith and belief in myself and it.

Speaking of the third book, that was another reason this song called out to me and why it's in my head this week of all weeks. First & Goal will be released by Marching Ink tomorrow, and it's the story of Harper, a fellow twenty-something who is out to prove her worth and value to a group of inhospitable new co-workers by joining their fantasy football league. Already a novice and an outsider, she's up against a lot of odds throughout the season. A lot of people don't believe in her ability to win one game let alone make it to the league's playoffs. Sometimes she doesn't either, but at a crucial turning point she regains the confidence she needs to finish the season as a lead contender. It's like this song could be her fight song. And it's even called "Fight Song," which is just perfect for the theme.

This is a song that I wish would have been out when I was in college or in that first post-college year where my dreams were big, but my confidence was weakening. I would have played this song as loudly and proudly as I do today, and it would have been a worthy anthem.

What are you jamming to this week?
